India is a parliamentary democracy with a 3-tier system of governance at the central, state and local level. State, districts and villages are the political sub-divisions of India.
Mangar village comes under district administration of Faridabad which is part of the Indian state of Haryana. The state government had recently announced Mangarbani Development Plan 2031 which provided for change of land use in a way which would drastically affect Mangarbani.
Villagers are at crossroads over their choice between conservation and development. They approached various political and administrative offices with their grievances but with little effect.
A breakthrough came when the National Green Tribunal took notice of one of their petitions and initiated a suo motu action to put a stay on the development plan. The matter is sub-judice at NGT.
